Introduction
AROS supports hard disks and optical drives attached to several interfaces:
- NVMe on the pci-e bus
- SATA aka Serial ATA or AHCI (IDE compatibility mode used in most cases)
- IDE (also known as ATA, PATA or Parallel ATA)
- USB
- SCSI limited
PCI-e
NVMe M.2 SSD (M key)
- Controller
- Cache (Separate DRAM for higher speed over cheaper SLC version)
- NAND (Main storage area with MLC, TLC or QLC versions of diminishing life expectancy)
There is only a handful of retail ssd drives that provide power loss protection capacitors - Crucial M500, M550 & MX100, Intel SSD 730 & SSD 320.
SanDisk's approach is to use nCache (i.e. an SLC portion) to flush the NAND mapping table from the DRAM more often. The lower write latency that SLC has ensures that in case of a power loss, the data loss is minimal but it is true that some data may be lost. Crucial/Micron operated, over a decade ago, NAND as MLC, which is why they need the capacitors to make sure that the NAND mapping table is safe.
Cache controller designs that are DRAM less use the internal SRAM cache in the controller to cache the NAND mapping table. It just requires a different mapping table design since SRAM caches are much smaller than DRAM. Ultimately the mapping table is still stored in NAND.
Pseudo-SLC can definitely last longer than MLC/TLC. With only one bit per cell, there is much more voltage headroom as there are only two voltage states. MLC drives store two bits per cell, so they would store a 1 and a 0 for example.

SATA
Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI), a programming interface for SATA host controllers. Platforms supporting AHCI may take advantage of performance features such as no master/slave designation for SATA devices — each device is treated as a master — and hardware-assisted native command queuing. AHCI may but not often also provides usability enhancements such as Hot-Plug (Desktop and Mobile Only). AHCI requires appropriate software support (e.g., an AHCI driver)
The issue with AHCI is that it's going to take a pile of test hardware just to figure out all the different bugs in all the motherboard chipsets and add-on PCI cards that 'kinda' implement AHCI. Not to mention Silicon Image, which took a very different approach from Intel's AHCI in their SATA controllers.
