Emergence delirium is a condition in which emergence from general anesthesia is accompanied by psychomotor agitation. This phenomenon can result in significant discomfort to the patient, as well as their treatment team and any family members who may be present. It may require additional nursing and medical treatment (especially treatment with analgesics or sedatives), which may delay discharge from the facility.
