The genus was first described in 1976 based on the type species Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens which was isolated from from the gastrointestinal tract of humans.[1] A second species, Anaerobiospirillum thomasii, was later described in 1997 based on isolates from the feces of domestic animals and humans with diarrhea.[2]
