The COVID-19 pandemic in Romania, a part of the worldwide pandemic, began on 26 February 2020 when the first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Romania was confirmed in Gorj County was confirmed.[3]
As of 31 January 2022, the National Institute of Public Health reported around 2,200,000 cases, 1,800,000 recoveries, and 60,000 COVID-19-related deaths.[2] More than 11.7 million RT-PCR tests and more than 7.3 million rapid antigen tests were processed.[2]
An anti-COVID-19 vaccination campaign, part of a global effort to slow down the spread of the virus, started on 27 December 2020. As of 27 January 2022, over 50% of the country's eligible population had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as part of an ongoing national vaccination campaign.[4]
As of 21 January 2023, 16,102,916 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered in Romania.[5]
